Custom sleep ear plugs in Christchurch

Most people who try foam plugs for sleeping give up for one of two reasons: they work loose overnight, or they press into the ear when you lie on your side. Custom sleep plugs are moulded to your ear and made low-profile, so they sit flush against your head. Made at our Halswell clinic in Christchurch.

What it is

  • Moulded from an impression of your own ear, so it seats the same way every night
  • Made low-profile, so it sits flush when the side of your head is on a pillow
  • Made from a softer material than plugs built for worksites
  • They bring the noise reaching your ear down — they do not remove it
  • Reusable and washable

What happens

What happens

Two appointments: one to take the impression, one to collect and fit.

  1. We check and take impressions

We look in both ears to make sure the canals are clear, then take a soft impression of each. Our custom ear plugs page describes exactly what that feels like.

  2. The lab makes them

Moulded to your ears in a low-profile shape.

  3. You collect and we fit

We check they seat properly, show you how to get them in and out, and adjust anything that rubs. It is worth wearing them for a few nights to get used to them.

Common questions about sleep ear plugs

Is sleeping with ear plugs bad for you?

For most people, wearing plugs overnight is an ordinary thing to do. What causes trouble is hygiene and ignoring symptoms. Wash them the way we show you and let them dry properly, do not wear them when your ear is sore or discharging, and come and see us if you get pain, itching or discharge. If you wear plugs most nights it is worth having your ears looked at from time to time.

Usually yes, because plugs bring noise down rather than shutting it out. But it depends on your alarm and how deeply you sleep, so test it over a weekend before you rely on it for work. Many people move the alarm nearer, turn it up, or use one that vibrates. (This question does not appear in the search data — we have included it because it is the practical thing people worry about.)

Check which is which first — they are shaped for one specific ear and usually marked. Line the plug up the way it was moulded, push gently and give it a small twist until it seats flush. We show you when you collect them. If one keeps working loose, bring it back rather than putting up with it.

They fit one specific ear, so they stay seated and sit flatter against the pillow, which is why people tend to keep wearing them. Foam is cheaper and fine now and then. If you have already given up on foam because of fit, that is the problem custom plugs are solving.

Many people do. Keep them clean, let them dry between uses, and give your ears a night off if they feel at all sore. If you wear plugs nightly it is worth having your ears looked at now and then to check wax is not building up.
