Custom hearing protection for work and music

If you work around machinery or play music, you already know foam plugs are a compromise — they muffle everything, they work loose, and they are easy to leave out. Custom protection is moulded to your ear and takes a filter, so the volume comes down while you can still hear what you need to. Made at our Halswell clinic in Christchurch.

Work & Music Protection

Custom hearing protection, made for your ears

What it is

  • A plug moulded from an impression of your own ear, so it seats the same way every time
  • A filter sits in the plug and lowers the volume reaching your ear
  • Filters come in different strengths, and we will talk through which suits what you are around
  • Reusable and washable

Who it is for

  • You work around machinery, power tools, compressors or engines
  • Your worksite requires hearing protection and foam plugs are not working for you
  • You play, teach or mix music and need to hear detail while bringing the volume down
  • Foam plugs fall out, hurt after an hour, or muffle so much you take them out
  • You need to stay aware of speech or warnings while wearing protection

What happens

What happens

Two appointments: one to take the impression, one to collect and fit.

  1. We talk about the noise

What you are around, how long for, and what you still need to hear while you are in it. That decides which filter suits.

  2. We check and take impressions

We look in both ears, then take a soft impression of each. See our custom ear plugs page for exactly what that feels like.

  3. The lab makes them

To the shape of your ears, with the filter fitted.

  4. You collect and we fit

We check they seat properly, show you how to get them in and out, and adjust anything that rubs.

Common questions about hearing protection

That is largely what the filter choice is for. A lower-strength filter brings the volume down while leaving more speech detail through; a higher-strength one cuts more of everything. Tell us what you need to hear on the job and we will work from that.

They are different rather than simply better, and it depends what you need. Foam is cheap, disposable and fine for occasional use. Custom plugs fit one specific ear, so they seat consistently and stay comfortable for longer stretches — which in practice means people keep them in.

Musicians usually want the volume down without the top end disappearing, so they tend to choose a filtered plug rather than foam. Which filter depends on your instrument and where you sit or stand.

The impression appointment is short. The plugs are then made at the laboratory, and we let you know when they are ready to collect and be fitted.
